Footprint Exhaustion

The sellers do not get stopped. They run out. You are going to watch it happen tick by tick, then learn to tell it apart from absorption.

The idea in one minute

Price falls because sellers are hitting bids faster than buyers are willing to sit there and take it. As long as they keep coming, every low gives way.

Exhaustion is what it looks like when they stop coming. Each new low prints less selling than the one before it. The last few ticks trade on almost nothing. Nobody stopped the sellers. They simply ran out of people willing to sell that low.

If buyers then step in, price can come off the low with very little effort, because the selling that pushed it down is gone.

How to read a footprint, in ten seconds

The bid is buyers waiting to buy. The offer is sellers waiting to sell. Waiting orders like these are called passive. Every row is one price. The left number is volume that traded on the bid, which means a seller hit it. The right number is volume that traded on the offer, which means a buyer lifted it. The stronger the colour behind a number, the bigger it is.

Under each bar, Δ is delta: buying minus selling for that bar.

02

Run the low yourself

Three bars of a selling move, then a fourth for what happens next. Press play and watch the left column at each new low. You start to see the numbers get smaller, and smaller, until there is almost nothing there.

Change how much selling is left, and whether buyers step in after it runs out. Every change replays the move.

Go deeper: why the selling shrinks

A falling market is fed by two kinds of seller. Some already own it and want out (they are long). Some are selling to open a short, betting on lower prices. Each of them sells once. The further price travels, the more of them have already sold.

At the start of the move there are plenty of both, so each new low gets hit hard. Near the end, the ones who wanted to sell have sold. At the next price down, there is almost nobody left who wants to sell. That is the small print. Price has gone as far as that group of sellers could push it.

Notice what exhaustion does not tell you. It says those sellers are done. It says nothing about whether new sellers arrive later, and nothing about whether buyers turn up. Try Nobody steps in in the simulator and watch price just sit there.

03

Exhaustion vs absorption

Both stop a falling market. They stop it for opposite reasons, and the footprint shows you which one you are looking at. Flip between them.

How I use it

I never trade exhaustion on its own. A low that runs out of sellers in the middle of nowhere is just a quiet moment in the session. It matters to me when it happens at a level I already had on my chart before price got there: the edge of the prior session's value area (the range where about 70% of its volume traded), a prior day low, a VWAP band, a clear demand zone.

Then I want the second half of the story. Shrinking selling only tells me the sellers are leaving. I want to see buyers step in: offers getting lifted, delta turning up, and price holding above the low on the first pullback. If that part never comes, I do not have a trade. I have a pause.

The habit. Level first, then the footprint. Exhaustion answers "are the sellers done here?" It does not answer "is this a good place to buy?" The level answers that.

Checkpoint

Checkpoint4 quick questions on exhaustion3 or 4 right: you have it. 2 or fewer: read sections 01 and 03 again.

Price keeps making new lows. The bid volume at each new low is 140, then 80, then 35, then 6. What are you most likely looking at?

At the low, 420 contracts trade on the bid and price still will not go lower. Which is this closer to?

You see clean exhaustion at a low. What do you still want to see before it means anything?

Why can price come off an exhausted low so easily?

Recap

What to take with you
  • Exhaustion is sellers running out, not sellers getting stopped.
  • On the footprint, the bid volume shrinks at each new low and the last prints are tiny.
  • Absorption is the opposite volume story: heavy selling at the low, and a passive buyer taking all of it.
  • Exhaustion is half a story. Wait for buyers to step in, at a level you already had.

If this clicked, the next thing to learn is where those levels come from. That is auction market theory and volume profile, and it is exactly where the Mentorship starts.

The Mentorship

You just learned to spot exhaustion. Now learn to trade it.

Knowing it is one thing. Trading it live is where most traders fall apart: they hesitate, enter late, get stopped out, and watch the move go without them.

The free lessons show you what the market is doing. The Mentorship teaches you how to trade it.

You can keep piecing it together from free videos for months, jumping between strategies. Or you can learn it properly, in order, with me in your corner.

  • Direct access to me. Stuck on a setup, a level or a losing streak? Ask me directly in the Discord. No more guessing alone.
  • The complete Mentorship course. Not the free intro. My full process, step by step: how I read the day, plan my levels, and enter, manage and exit my trades.
  • The Discord community. Traders working the same process as you. You're not doing this alone anymore.

For traders who are done being inconsistent and want a real process.
