Implied Volatility and Vega: The Price of Movement

Sometimes the whole options board changes while price does nothing. That is implied volatility moving. Learn what it is, how it reprices every option at once, and how it can force futures orders with no news behind them.

The idea in one minute

Implied volatility is the market's current estimate of how much the underlying will move, priced into the option.

Fire insurance on an igloo is cheap. Fire insurance on a wooden house on a hot dry day with a barbecue going is expensive. Same cover, same payout, same year. The price is different because the chance of a big event changed. When people say "vol is up", the barbecue got lit: options got more expensive without the underlying doing anything.

Fact marks Black-Scholes maths and hedging arithmetic. Naive model marks a story about what dealers or price will do: useful, not a fact.

02

Vega: a bell that peaks at the strike

FactThe teal bell is vega at every underlying price for a 100 strike. It is tallest at the money, where the extrinsic is fattest, and fades to nearly nothing far from the strike, where there is barely any extrinsic for vol to inflate. More days left means more vega.

Black-Scholes, interest rate 0. Example: 100 strike call.

FactWhen implied vol moves, every option on the board reprices without a single trade in the underlying. If you watch a positioning screen (a chart of how many options sit at each strike), you will see its bars rescale while price sits still. Nothing about the positions changed. The price of risk did.

03

How big is the expected move?

FactImplied vol is quoted per year and scaled by the square root of time. One standard deviation of movement over a period is roughly price x implied vol x the square root of the time, in years. On the model's distribution about two thirds of outcomes land inside one of those, and about 95% inside two. Real markets have fatter tails than the model.

Example index at 6,000. Lognormal distribution from Black-Scholes, interest rate 0. Axis marks sit at one and two moves either side of the start. Time in calendar days (1 day = 1/365 of a year). Counting a trading day as 1/252 of a year, as many traders do, gives a one-day move about 20% bigger.

04

Vanna: vol moves, so hedges move

FactRaise implied vol and every delta away from the strike drifts toward the middle: calls toward 0.50, puts toward -0.50. Lower it and deltas snap to the extremes: 0 or 1 for calls, 0 or -1 for puts. Raising vol is like handing the option more time. Changed deltas mean hedges that are now wrong and must be corrected. Customers bought 100 calls here (example), so a dealer is short them and holds a hedge. Move vol and watch the forced trade, with price standing still.

Hedge

Same price, new vol, new hedge

Black-Scholes, interest rate 0. Example: price 100, 30 days, dealer short 100 calls. The hedge is counted in units of the underlying, so the forced trade is 100 x the change in delta.

How I use it

When the whole options board rescales on a quiet tape, I do not assume I missed a flood of new positions. That is vega: the price of risk changed.

FactWhen price moves with nothing on the news feed, a jump in implied vol is one honest answer. It changes every delta, the hedges are suddenly wrong, and correcting them is a real ES or NQ order with no price move that caused it.

Naive modelI read the direction of vol, not its level: spot VIX or VIX1D against the previous close. VIX at 17 and rising is a rising-vol day. VIX at 24 and falling is a falling-vol day. On falling-vol days moves tend to end at strikes where options were bought. On rising-vol days they tend to run through them. It is context for my own trading, never a signal on its own.

The habit. Before you explain a move, check whether vol moved. If it did, the hedges moved with it.

Recap

What to take with you
  • Implied vol is the market's estimate of movement. Higher vol, pricier options, same underlying.
  • Vega is the price change per vol point: biggest at the money and with more time.
  • One expected move is about price x vol x the square root of the time in years (30 days = 30/365).
  • Vanna: vol moves deltas, so hedges move, and that is a real futures order with no news.

Knowing what vol does to the board is one piece of reading the market. The Mentorship is where you put the whole process together.

The Mentorship

You just learned what implied volatility really prices. Now learn to read it in the futures you trade.

Knowing it is one thing. Trading it live is where most traders fall apart: they hesitate, enter late, get stopped out, and watch the move go without them.

The free lessons show you what the market is doing. The Mentorship teaches you how to trade it.

You can keep piecing it together from free videos for months, jumping between strategies. Or you can learn it properly, in order, with me in your corner.

  • Direct access to me. Stuck on a setup, a level or a losing streak? Ask me directly in the Discord. No more guessing alone.
  • The complete Mentorship course. Not the free intro. My full process, step by step: how I read the day, plan my levels, and enter, manage and exit my trades.
  • The Discord community. Traders working the same process as you. You're not doing this alone anymore.
