Every session is an auction looking for a fair price. It either finds one and stays, or it moves until it does. Once you see that, the chart stops looking random.

The market has one job: to make trade happen. Price is the tool it uses to find the other side.
When buyers are in a hurry and sellers will not meet them, price moves up until it finds sellers. When sellers are in a hurry, it moves down until it finds buyers. Once it finds a price where both sides are happy to trade, it stays there and trades. Then something changes, and it goes looking again.
The price zone where the market does most of its business is called value. That gives you the two states of every market. Balance: price rotating around a fair price, two sided trade, value building. Imbalance: one side in control, price moving to find new value. Every session you trade is some mix of the two.
Price advertises: it moves to invite the other side. Time regulates: how long price stays somewhere tells you if it is accepted. Volume confirms: real business at a price means the market agrees with it.
A live session. The bars on the right are the profile: a bar grows for every minute price spends at that price, and the longest bar, in gold, is the point of control (POC), the price the market has spent the most time at so far. Leave it in balance and watch value build. Then hand control to the buyers or the sellers and watch price go looking for the other side, until it finds it.
The initial balance (IB) is the range of the first hour of the New York session, 9:30 to 10:30 New York time. It is the first rough answer to "where is fair price today?" What price does with it for the rest of the day tells you what kind of day you are in. When price trades beyond it, that is a range extension. Pick a day, then drag through it.
The first hour is when the market absorbs everything that happened overnight and the bigger, slower participants place their first business of the day. A wide first hour usually means a lot of that business already got done, and the rest of the day often stays inside it. A narrow first hour means very little was settled, and there is more room for one side to take over.
A range extension tells you one side was willing to do business at new prices. Whether they keep going is what separates a normal variation day from a trend day.
Six slices of a session. For each one, call it. Two seconds is enough once you see it.
The first question I ask every session is this one: is the market in balance, or is it looking for new value?
If it is balanced, inside yesterday's value and rotating, I expect the edges to hold and I am not interested in chasing moves in the middle. If it breaks out of balance and price builds time and volume outside, I stop expecting it to come back and look to go with it on pullbacks instead. The initial balance gives me an early read on how much range got settled, and a clean extension beyond it tells me one side is willing to do business at new prices. If it keeps going, that side has taken control for now.
In auction market theory, what is the market's job?
Price rotates in a range, both sides trade, volume builds in the middle. Balance or imbalance?
What is the initial balance?
A narrow first hour, then price keeps extending in one direction all day. What kind of day is that?
